Introducing the Dentistry Scotland Awards judges
Seb started working at FMC in 2014. He is the editor of Dentistry.co.uk, assistant editor of Dentistry magazine and has been the editor of Dentistry Scotland magazine since 2015. Recently Seb passed with distinction the BDIA Certificate: Introduction to Dentistry.
Julian English has more than 20 years’ experience at the helm of the multi-award-winning Dentistry magazine and numerous other dental journals. Editorial director of FMC, Julian is a well-known face in the dental publishing industry. Julian chairs the editorial committee of the British Dental Industries Association. Julian attends many events at home and overseas throughout the year.
Arshad Ali is the clinical director of Scottish Centre for Excellence in Dentistry. Arshad qualified as a dentist with commendation at the university of Glasgow in 1978 and carried out 10 years of postgraduate training in Glasgow, Cardiff, Sweden and London. He was appointed to the first NHS consultant post in restorative dentistry in Wales in 1988. He returned to Glasgow Dental Hospital and School in 1997 to take up an NHS consultant post. He left this post in March 2011 to focus fully on Scottish Centre for Excellence in Dentistry.
Arshad’s first practice in Glasgow was in Niddrie Square. The referrals to the practice increased significantly and a decision was made to buy a shell unit in Watermark Business Park close to the Glasgow Science Centre. This has been fitted out to a very high standard. A large team of dentists, doctors, specialists and consultants work in SCED, supported by an excellent team. The mission statement of the company is to provide quality care and excellence in everything they do. Scottish Centre for Excellence in Dentistry has won several awards including Best Practice Scotland, The Dentistry Awards in 2009, Best Specialist Referral Practice, UK Private Dentistry Awards in 2010 and was a finalist at the Private Dentistry Awards 2014. Arshad has been involved in implant dentistry since 1985 and has continued to develop his expertise in this area. He was a winner of the Creative Circles Award at the 40th Anniversary Nobel Biocare World Conference in Las Vegas in 2005 and the Crown and Bridge and Implant Award at the Nobel Biocare World Tour Conference in London in September 2006.
He was given an award for Outstanding Achievement at the Scottish Asian Business Awards 2014, having previously won Businessman of the Year in 2009. He was also one of the finalists in the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010. He has given over 350 lectures and courses in the UK, Europe, North America, Hawaii and the Far East. He was also an examiner for the Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery Examination at The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. He has published numerous papers in the dental literature. He has been an honorary professor with the Department of Health and Medical Services, Government of Dubai. He continues to enjoy all aspects of dentistry, family and social life to the full!
Graeme Hannah qualified from Dundee University in 1987. After working in Newcastle and Glasgow he settled back to Fife where he has worked in general practice for 20 years. Graeme has thoroughly enjoyed the varied challenges this throws at him. He enjoys treating families and individuals with an emphasis on prevention and routine dentistry. Graeme is one of four partners in a three-practice dental business, employing seven full-time dentists offering a healthy, varied mix of NHS, independent and private dentistry. At home Graeme is married. He has a strong interest in rugby and has played for Scotland youth, refereed pro rugby throughout Europe and now coaches at Kirkcaldy Rugby FC, where he is vice president. He also enjoys cycling up mountains throughout Europe and golfing.
Amy qualified with honours in her BDS degree and a total of 11 undergraduate prizes. Following university, she moved into private practices within Fife and Edinburgh and has undertaken extensive postgraduate training. She has passed the required examinations to become a member of the dental faculty of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and has been privileged to sit on the council of the Royal Odonto Chirurgical Society of Scotland and the East of Scotland BDA.
Elaine graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1992. She is a past president and accredited member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Elaine has a masters of science degree in restorative and aesthetic dentistry, and is a Digital Smile Design UK instructor, and an opinion leader for Ivoclar Vivadent and Optident. Elaine has authored articles on clinical dentistry, treatment planning and the business of dentistry. She has two private practices – Cherrybank Dental Spa in Perth and Edinburgh.
